Learning About A Kriegsmarine Soldier Through Letters
Hello!
I recently won a lot of over 50 letters from a German soldier in WWII from an auction. Since I do not know how to read German or Old German, I was only able to get a few translated with some help. (I included one of the original letters as well as the roughly translated English version of the one and of another in this post).
One letter (1944) appears to be a letter sent to his family describing that he was attacked and wounded on his boat. The other letter, addressed to the same person, says that he died due to his injuries.
The name of the soldier is Heinz Fredrick Studt. From what I got from the letters, I believe Studt was in the Kriegsmarine and received an Iron Cross Second Class. I also have reason to believe he was on U-boat 766. In one of the letters, it mentions him at a hospital in St. Nazaire, France. In records that I found online, U-boat 766 was stationed in St. Nazaire, France during the time he was in the hospital. However, I do not know how accurate this is, it is just something I concluded from doing some research.
One letter mentions how he was supposed to be a Commander. So I'm guessing he was supposed to be promoted to Commander of his own boat before his death.
I am really interested to know more about Studt including what boat he was on, where he was located, and more information about where he was wounded. If anyone can offer any help that would be much appreciated! Thanks!
p.s. Let me know if there is any problems with the pictures and I can repost them
The Feldpost Nr is for a naval vehicle unit: 24. Marine-Kraftfahr-Abteilung.
Edit: U-766 sailed on the 26th July 1944 and was at sea for 5 days but wasn't at sea for the date he was wounded, this being the only period at sea for July.
