    Hello everyone.

At first I wasn’t sure about posting this sterbebild because of the nature of his death. But after deliberation I decided that although it is a very sad one, it is a subject that needs to be acknowledged.

    Josef Waldmannstetter - Stabs-kompanie Festungs Regiment 965

    Surname:
    Waldmannstetter
    Forename:
    Josef
    Rank:
    Unterfeldwebel
    Date of birth:
    28.01.1913
    Place of birth:
    Rohr/Nb.
    Date of death/becoming missing:
    13.08.1943
    Place of death/becoming missing:
    Amalias

Josef Waldmannstetter is buried in the military cemetery in Dionyssos-Rapendoza (GR).
Grave site: Endgrablage: Gruft 2 Platte 15 - Unter den Unbekannten
During the re-interment activities in his original burial location, it was not possible to identify him without any trace of doubt, so he has been buried as an ''unknown soldier'' in the cemetery Dionyssos-Rapendoza.

His cause of death is recorded as Selbstmord : Suicide

He started his service with Musikkorps Aufklärungs regiment 8, which was the regimental band. He was then transferred to Ersatz und Ausbildungs Bataillon 999, which appears to be a punishment or probation unit. Whether he was sent there for a ‘crime’, or assigned there because of his NCO rank, I’m not sure. Finally he was assigned to Stabs Kompanie Festungs Regiment 965 which was based in the Peloponnese.

An unfortunate one for sure. The family appear to have been told he died in a field hospital, to perhaps spare them additional pain.

It is BlackCat and I agree with what you say about the field hospital. I guess it would be the equivalent of the ‘instant death’ that we see so often in documents and letters that were sent to families.

Some information about Martin Götz -

Martin Götz (1911 in Neuötting - 1942 in the Caucasus) was a priest from Töging am Inn.

Martin Götz was born in Neuötting in 1911. His parents moved temporarily to Pforzheim and soon after the First World War back to Töging am Inn, where his father found a job as a medic at the Innwerk.

After completing his studies in Passau, Martin Götz celebrated his first class in Töging in 1936. In several cooperator positions in the Bavarian Forest he developed into an open-minded and modern-minded young priest, who soon came into conflict with the ruling Nazis. He lost his license to teach and was later arrested. Even after he took up his position as a cooperator from 1934 in the parish of Burgkirchen am Wald, where he was met with great sympathy, the Nazis continued to monitor him, arrested him again and imprisoned him in the Stadelheim prison.

Mrs. Maria Götz's half-brother was Matthias Zierhut, local group leader and, shortly before the end of the war, mayor of Töging. Here he led a strict regiment. His sister asked him to do something for Martin, his nephew. That was probably in connection with Stadelheim or the subsequent draft.

In the spring of 1941 Götz was drafted into the military. He was killed in heavy fighting in the Caucasus early 1942.

At the Dreikönigssingen in 1932, three archangels preceded the procession of the kings (from left): theology students Michael Westenthanner from Neuötting, Willi Noppenberger, farmer's son of the Reindl farmer in Höchfelden near Töging, and Martin Götz. All three died in the war.
