This offensive went into history books as the largest amphibious assault of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945). The Germans retook Feodosiya on 18 January 1942, 19 days later.

The Leichtes Sturmboot 39 -
The Leichtes Sturmboot 39 was a small, high-powered assault craft used for river and small waterway crossings and assaults. They were also employed on security and anti-partisan patrols along river ways in occupied territories. It consisted of a frame-reinforced wooden hull about 6m long, 1.5m wide and weighed 170kg. The drive consisted of a 30 hp 4-stroke outboard motor with a 18 litre tank, which lasted about 1 1/2 hours.

The Sonderverband Bergmann was formed by the Abwehr in the fall of 1941 to be used as a security force in the Caucasus. It was withdrawn from the Crimea in February 1943. In late 1943 two battalions of the unit went to Greece and one to Poland.

Sonderverband Bergmann
Bergmann (literally "mountain man" i.e. "highlander") was the code-name for the deployment in the Caucasus of special units of volunteers operating under the authority of the German Abwehr's "II" (sabotage) section. The Sonderverband ("special unit") "Bergmann" was initially made up of around 550 largely untrained men from both the North and South Caucasus (émigrés and prisoners-of-war from the region) serving around a core of roughly 200 German soldiers with different specialist skills, but would later grow to a peak of around 3,000. The Sonderverband was created in November 1941 in the "Stranz" Lager of the training camp in Neuhammer-am-Queis in Silesia now Świętoszów in Poland, 120km N.E.E of Dresden. A small core of German instructors had been assembled here, many of them Russian-speakers belonging to the Lehr-Regiment Brandenburg zbV 800, who were to teach infantry combat and tactics to the Caucasian troops.

For young collectors setting out, collecting death cards are a fascinating and fairly inexpensive opportunity to learn something of the fallen, their unit and the combat that took their lives. Again Willmore another example of finding something a little more interesting as a result of some easy research.
Thanks BlackCat and so very true. I find the research so rewarding, especially when I find something unusual.
