I've just noticed that he didn't exactly progress much after Stalingrad - he was a Unteroffizier in October 1942 and was still the same in March 1945! I wonder how much the wounds hindered his promotion chances? Unfortunately there was no wehrpass/soldbuch with this grouping so we shall probably never know.
