the photo in # 9, taken from inside of a car, does that mean that the POLAR sign could be driven right up to? and it it still there?

Yes the sign stood just by the "Eismeerstrasse" road.

The Polar sign is no longer where it was during the Second World War. The construction of the "Santa Claus Village" in the area has changed the area profoundly and a new sign has been erected.
