US navy MkV gask mask carrying bag markings

Hello there,

I recently picked up a Navy MKV gas mask and carrying case. there is nothing particularly remarkable about the mask, however the carrying case is covered in drawings done with some sort of black marker. These drawings are the only marks that have been added to the bag.

Does anyone know if there is any sort of significance to these such as a specific ship or unit, a bored sailor undertaking some arts and crafts, or something that probably didn't show up until after it left the navy?

I pick that latter hypothesis.

That said, is it possibly masking something written underneath it?

taking a second look at it, it seems like there is indeed some writing underneath everything except the small triangle on the front which looks like it was added with a different marker as it has a much warmer tone then everything else. on the large patch on the left side it appears to say monk, and the trapezoid shaped blob on the flap appears to have 5H beneath it. I haven't been able to make out any of the others but they all appear to be some combination of numbers or letters.

any idea why someone might want to try and cover over this stuff?

I think the writing is most likely the owners service number and his surname.
