Could be blood. Generally, that reddish hue is more often from rust, but still an amazing piece with a lot of history.

Most of the weapons brought home from the Vietnam war are in that type of condition. Sometimes you wonder how they even shot a round. The harsh jungle conditions and the corrosive ammo took a toll on these weapons. I assume not much cleaning happened during that time either (For obvious reasons).
Nice pick up with the actual papers (Another thing that’s highly forged these days to bring more $$$$$$).
