In 1967 the 161 Battery replaced their Italian L5 howitzers with the older but more robust US M101A1 howitzers.
Initially in 1965 in Vietnam the RNZA 161 Battery came under the command of the US 173rd Airborne Brigade and the NZ gunners during 1965 and 1966 were permitted to wear the 173rd Airborne Brigade patch on their left sleeve.

A couple of photos from 1965. The 161st Battery served in Vietnam from June 1965 to May 1971. First photo is from departure from their base at Waiouru 18/6/65 being addressed by Governor General Sir Bernard Fergusson (Burma veteran) and the second is receiving a welcome in Saigon later in June '65.
