I have to agree with Andy that the damage on the piece that started this thread does not look like pick axe damage. I have a few that were clearly "de militarized" with pick axes after the Great War. Here is one for comparison. I guess we will never know for sure, but I would say that the damage on the thread starter probably is battle damage. Jim G.
Funnily enough Jim, I have a good idea of what battle damage looks like but for comparison with pick axe damage I also had your example in mind as it is so memorable. The difference between the two forms of damage is quite apparent in your photos. Thanks for posting them.
