re: what kind of helmet are these M16 looking helmets?
Hi Stuka,
It seems to be a German M18 helmet. These did not have chinstrap posts for the M91 strap. The chinstrap was fixed to the metal liner band with D-rings like the M31 liner. Same as the ear cut-out ones.
The fact that there are more liner holes present, might mean use by either the Finns or the Afghans. The latter fixed a national emblem on one side. I believe this required two holes being drilled in the right side under and to the rear of the vent lug.
The fact that the vent lugs are closed up baffles me.
Cheers,
Emile

Did somebody try to use automotive body putty to fix the pitting?
It looks like where the vents go that there is pink putty still in the hole's.
Its hard to tell from the pic's????????

Yes I did!!
Using left overs from other restaurations!
But the two air ventilation lugs on both sides to fixe the "Stirnpanzer" (steelplate) where closed at an earlyer date (brased with copper).
But thise probleme is to be solved by an Australian guy!! ;-)
It just changed of owner.
