Thanks Mark/John.
There were other units that were named after Foreigners. I'm sure they were changed as well.
I do wish I could read the writing inside the helmet. Could potentially ID the owner.

My greatest fear is that one day I will die and my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them

Whilst we are on the subject Michael, as I said I would quite like to have a decent representative item in my collection and have always been put off by my own lack of knowledge and an awareness of the plethora of (to my eyes) pretty good fakes out there. So, I would like to do proper research (immensely enjoyable in itself) before doing anything stupid. As you appear to have something of a "grip" on the subject can you recommend any good reference sources that I might consult in the first instance? I will probably only end up with one (we've all said that right?) so I am looking for an optimum "target zone". Any suggestions are most appreciated.
Regards
Mark
"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing he cares more about than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature with no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
I know of no "single" book and all the books I have seen are quite old. The issue with Haub's is that they were worn for almost 80 years with hundreds of variations that boggles the mind.
That said, the best place to start IMHO is Kaisers Bunker website. Ton's of information. I am constantly referring to it.
It doesn't cover every variation but I would say the vast majority of Haub's that we are likely to encounter.
Kaiser's Bunker
There is a new book that I've been thinking of picking up. It is not focused on Pickelhaubs but more on the infantry regiments themselves.
