Hi Y’all hoping to get some info. This is my first dive into WW1 Militaria. Got this on an online auction. Hoping to get some info. 1. Should i be worried it’s fake? 2. Would it even be possible or worth it to get a strap, cockades, etc on it? 3. Value i’m in this about 125 dollars. Hoping i didn’t get taken, took a chance and went for it as time was ending quick. Excited to add it to my collection for sure! Thanks in advance for any details. Welcome to the forum Scott!

I’ve not studied these, but it looks original based on what I can see. I think you did OK overall as it appears to be a fairly solid example. Have a look a member MAP’s super example in the post below. This should give you an idea of how they looked when issued. Reich’s and Prussian Kokarden can still be located with some perseverance. Original chinstraps are scarce and many were re-purposed on Imperial Steel helmets as the war progressed, but they do still turn up from time to time, or alternatively an aged replica strap might be OK too. If none of the tongues are torn, you may be able to re-thread the liner string as it should be. Any markings in the helmet?

Just a tip re: the photos. Looks like you’re shooting into the sun? Best to have it behind you to escape the glare. I always find dull overcast days, or late in the day works well.

I’m sure MAP and others will also have some thoughts to share and should be along soon.

My knowledge of these is limited. But I think you did very well for $125. Will be hard to find an original strap but you can find nice repros.

But you can certainly find original Reichs and Prussian cockades with a little searching. They are out there. eBay as well as dealer sites (Age of Kings , etc.) you will also need to find a feldzeichen. Originals are out there but patience is needed along with active searching. Some good repros out there as well.

I would recommend a hat stretcher and stand for this. It needs it. Skip Greenwade produces some of the best out there. I use his stands for all my Haubs and visors

Just for comparison, here is mine. I spent a lot more than $125 LoL

Thank Y’all for the great info so far! I will get some better photos up for sure! These were provided by seller. Will def look at hat stretcher form as well! Have a fledgling collection of WW2 based headwear so I will look to get this one outfitted albeit with repro most likely for budget reasons. Very excited to have it added to the collection. Will also take a look for markings and post any findings.
