Michael is correct, these chains were worn with civilian dress, usually on formal occasions. My relatives wore theirs at weddings, funerals and family reunions.

Excellent Greg. So used for more formal occasions? Military events or just civilian type gatherings? Or maybe both/multi purpose?

On military uniforms one would more likely wear either the small Feldschnalle ribbon bar or the larger Grossordensschnalle with the full size decorations.
