aicusv, the O-ring doesn’t seem to be any kind of quick release gadget.. there is nothing to connect it to (the pack straps only having the triangular loops at the ends), and I cannot see anything being much quicker than the already present hook system as it is.
As I mentioned before, these appear to be a pretty standard fitting (though I have seen a very few without it), and always at the bottom left, so not for a specialist piece of kit..
I'll have to go back and look at period photos and see if I can find out what the ring was for. I don't believe mine has it.
