M1917 Lederschutzmaske

Article about: Hello folks. After the British medal group I recently purchased, I was inspired to take a brief foray into WWI militaria. With some precious savings left to spend, I decided to pick this up.

I second Andy's advice. As with rubber gas masks, the best treatment for a leather mask is nothing at all. As long as it's kept out of sunlight and in a stable environment, it'll last forever. The straps are made of canvas, which is virtually indestructible from a preservation standpoint. Keep it away from sunlight and excessive humidity, and you should have no problems.

    Magnificent Example!
GM17s are my favourite WW1 masks along the ARS, I can never find one for a normal prige though. They are always extremely overpriced. Anyway, as I said. Splendid

Sorry, I meant to reply to your post sooner but I've been a bit busy. Yes, they are extremely expensive compared to other WWI masks, but the same thing is true of anything German, whether it's Great War or WWII! The one positive about them is that it's very easy to find them in good condition, due to them being made of leather.
