Any chance of a couple of photos, (with a measure alongside if possible) mate, they wll give us a lot better idea and help identifying it.

These photos should do. The reference coin is a US quarter.
I would guess, due to the size and materials used, that this is fishing related and not military? Alloy and the size would simply not take any real weight to have a military application.

There you go. Honest Ade chiming in. Actually thats what I thought but it could have some military use. Light line throwing, Creek dragging (looking for detonator lines) putting trip wires accross something. . . .
The green tin made me think military.
Probably just a surplus tin.
