Gebirgsjager / Mountain Troop Alpine Climbing Rope
Just picked up this 3-strand laid Manila German Gebirgsjager / Mountain Troop Alpine Rope for my collection. I have done some research on these climbing ropes. The red fiber strand indicates the length of this rope. This one is 115’ long and ¾” in diameter. You will see references to either green or red strands being used in the rope design that indicates its length. Manila was the main cordage of Alpinists. This one is not Hemp, Jute, Sisal, Cotton, or Nylon. Manila was the standard cordage preferred during the WW2 period until in 1943 when 3-strand laid Nylon came onto the scene.
This rope is very heavy and has the WW2 period-correct Sailmaker Whipped Ends. The rope shows, rock rash, fading, the patina of climbing use, no cuts and no dry rot. Manila rope has been used as far back as the Egyptians for rigging sails, mooring and anchor ropes because of its durability, strength, and ability to hold a tight knot. It will look nice when I can pull my Gebirgsjager display together on a mannequin with the gear.

My greatest fear is that one day I will die and my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them
