I am missing something on this canteen?

Article about: I was looking at picking up this canteen in the recent ratisbons auction due to its great condition however it went well, a little above my budget. It sold for €500 plus 22.5 percent of th

I bought some great items from him many years ago before his auction site became so popular. Fair pricing at the time for some outstanding items

Can't blame him for the crazy hammer prices. It's the buyers.

But the commissions stop me from bidding as well
    I agree,

I often bought from Klaus as I say and I have met him and liked him. It is just the way this has gone and I will leave him to the feeding frenzy. It's just not the way I like to deal. If i got caught up in it I would know I had overpaid and any sense of "victory" in a bid-battle would be pyrrhic and very short-ived resulting in a less than favourable appreciation of the item concerned

Well, in the process of making my reply in this thread I decided to look at Ratisbons website which provoked the news letter emails to restart and I note that unsold auction lots are being offered as straight sales but still with a 17.5% buyers premium.

Is it me or is this a bit of a cheek to add a buyers premium to a straight sale regardless of whether it had previously been an auction lot?

A straight sale is just that and is not the same as an auction purchase so this is simply increasing the listed price by 17.5%!! This is "sharp practice" in my opinion.

I have been wondering about some of those auction prices since quite some time. I'm no specialist on canteens, but they are one of my main areas of interest, so I watch the market and know about special variations.
Personally I see nothing special at all with this canteen. For me it seems to be a regular early war canteen which are not really hard to find. It is in a pretty good condition, has all matching parts made by one of the biggest makers, so it is certainly a canteen that is of interest for any serious collector.
But, including the fees, more than 600€?

Here are 3 canteens of the same type I bought within the last 2 years. All are matching, all of them have never been used and all of them are in a similar good or even better condition. Makers are RFI 38, AEMA 37 and SSM 42. I bought all of them on public auctions or sales. So they were no flea market bargains.
Still all three together did not even cost half the price of what was paid at ratisbons for just one piece.

It could be that I miss a detail or something, maybe that type of canteen for that maker and year is something really special.
No matter what was so attracting about it for someone to pay that amount of money, I do not get it.
I just hope somebody bought it who knows what he was doing and maybe is closing a gap in his probably awesome canteen collection (even though he paid a in my opinion ridiculous price).
I fear though that somebody bought it who just doesn't need to care about prices and overpaid 6 times just for getting a standard canteen in good condition right there right then.
But then again it must have been at least two of those fools.
    I'm puzzled.

    Cheers,
    Marco

Nice, honest, common ston mint canteen...but the price is really crazy.
Apart from the general condition of the piece which are really good, there is nothing to justify this price.

It only takes a few of these crazy prices to be realised for new benchmarks to be set ..........have you priced a MP44 mag pouch recently?
