This is almost 100% definitely early east german, likely KVP or 1950s NVA.

The three rivets on the lid, and the lack of rivets on the lugs give it away. They later changed to a somewhat uglier version without the strap loop, and a small buldge at the top of the bale.

Interesting marking on the handle though, presubably "44" could stand for 1944, so it is entirely possible it was a wartime lid modified with the extra bolt to match ddr specs?

Either way, the lack of lug-rivets is the biggest giveaway that it is DDR manufactured.
