SS on a MG ammo box : Help please.

Hello gentlemen,

I found this MG ammo box a short time ago and the two "SS" painted 2X on the body give me a problem.
Please, what do you think the meaning of these two "SS".
Is it a real SS marking or an ammo spécification or anything else.

Could it rather be a stencilled '88' Carfin? .....thats what it looks like to me.

I think they held 5 x 50 round belts - so 250 rounds in total.
If it is 88 and not SS, i do not know what that would mean?

I have a k98 frog with a '12' on it, maybe a garrison number?

My two cents worth was the thought that it stood for schwere Spitz-Geschoß, it doesn't look like siegrunes.
