Article about: Hey chaps Got recently a canteen that seems to be a Sanitäter Feldflasche but has no markings on the cup, on the neck, wool cover or anything else. Have checked the interior of the strap but

This has to be checked, but the use of aluminium would make this canteen ( and yours ) pre-war or very early war. If so the Labeflasche would have not only maker's marks, but also in most cases regimental markings. And there is nothing to be seen anywhere... Not to mention the fact that this type of chain to retain the cap isn't what you should expect there.
Judging from the many wartime Labeflasche I have seen, there is rarely any regimental markings on them. Maker's marks....yes, but no unit marks for the most part. Many of the examples seen here in the States were never issued and were brought back as souvenirs from depots and warehouses and therefore would not have had any unit marks.

Here are two of mine, one covered in a fine weave Ersatz material and one brown corduroy covered. Both are manufacturer marked and dated.

As soon as ersatz canteens were produced regimental markings vanished almost completely. It is of course easier to mark aluminium than enameled iron or any replacement material that has been used, but it also takes time and concern for something that isn't so important anymore.
These two are superb. A friend of mine once found a cup similar to the one shown above, thinking he had done the hardest part and would find the canteen without too much trouble, but the perfect Labeflasche he hoped for is yet to be found.
