Merry Christmas one and all,
An idea has been floating around my head recently... I am considering developing an application for both Apple IOS and Android phones.
The app itself will contain information, pictures and price estimates for Third Reich awards and decorations both military and civil.
It is just an idea at the moment but I would just like to get a feel of the audience I am trying to achieve. The purpose of the app is to help more junior collectors when around various events and shows.
You may be aware that to publish an app on the Apple App Store a yearly subscription of $99 has to be made and they also take a 30% commission per sale. We all know how expensive reference books are so I purpose a possible of price of £4.99 - would this be reasonable?
As I have said this is just an idea but I just want to get a feel of what you guys think... I don't want it to be a waste of money/time.
I don't know about Glennyboy this sounds more like Del boy!.....
Sounds like an idea but i haven't got a mobile phone of any description so no use to me!..
If personally don't think it would be possible to synthesise all of the available information that would be needed to create and commercialise such an App.
Even simply collecting photographs of high enough quality for each item will be nigh impossible without the cooperation of numerous third parties willing to provide them plus all the copyright agreements that would be associated.
Have you created a draft business plan to enable you to identify your development costs etc so you can judge whether your target sale price is realistic? What is the average budget to develop and commercialse an App? Underfunding is often the cause of project failure.
Books are often expensive because they actually cost a lot to produce and market. The majority of the the cost of a book is actually the costs associated with non-print production costs which is why ebooks are often only marginally cheaper than print editions of the same book...not publishers greed.
When I searched the Apple App store using "militaria", surprisingly there was only one app available - a Polish militaria shop.
I don't collect In this area so cannot comment on the potential usefulness of such an App.
But be aware that if you are using data from other compiled datasets whether from books or online sources you may be in breach of UK and European copyright laws because the "compiliers" or "editors" of such datasets own copyright in their own compilations. For example if I were to create a listing or dataset of all the book titles in a given subject, I would own the copyright to "my" list or dataset although all of the titles would be owned by someone else. If you were to then copy out the data from my listing into one of your own you would be in breach of my copyright unless I gave you permission.
Good luck with the project though...there isn't a similar app. so you might be creating a whole new genre
