A friend of mine found this helmet. Any idea what it could?

Article about: Hi, this helmet was found in an old house. Its made of steel, so pretty sure, no M1 inliner. But what could it be?!

Is it possible that this could have been a project by someone with a bit of metalworking expertise? The crude appearance would make sense, and it would explain why no one here recognises it. It definitely doesn’t look factory-produced.

Well, I googled "WW1 Experimental helmet" and there are several similar examples from many of the participants, including the US Ford Experimental helmet...I love a good mystery, lol...
