During the Second World War, the camouflage net was developed for the German steel helmet. This was attached to the helmet, allowing camouflage material such as leaves, small twigs with leaves, or grass to be attached to the helmet. However, the net itself camouflaged the helmet. The hard shape (silhouette) of the helmet was broken and possible reflections were greatly reduced.

After the Second World War, the camouflage nets were first developed and used by the BGS (Federal Border Guard) and then by both German armies (Bundeswehr in West Germany, National People's Army „NVA“ in East Germany).
