Hi there,
here is a late war M40 Wehrmacht helmet, which was modified to an M1953 of the Federal Border Guard.
You can see his long service life.
Maher Q = F.W. Quist Esslingen
Rough camouflage color in black-green RAL 6012.
Bails and chin strap
Interior I53 3rd model.
Inside the wearer's name and the reference to the 1st / GSA A Nord 1. Hundertschaft / Grentschutzabteilung Ausbildung Nord in Walsrode = 1st Hundreds / Border Guard Department Training North, Walsrode.
Former Wehrmacht helmets were used by the Federal Border Guard (BGS) in some cases until the 1990s, when they were finally phased out.
Here we have such an late II World War M40 of the Wehrmacht, which was modified by the BGS to an M1953.
From 1975 the helmets were modified again at the BGS by being reworked and given a new rough finish in mint green RAL 6029. The metal parts of the I32 interior were also painted in RAL 6029 from this point on.
This helmet is one of the longest-serving in German history. It was revised from 1975 and also received a new inner lining. So it was retired in the mid-1990s.
Maker Q = F.W. Quist Esslingen
Rough colour in mint green RAL 6029.

The Liner
Here a (former M35) from Quist from the Second World War, later used as the M53 by the BGS.
Colleague "Sleewalker" wrote me the following about this helmet elsewhere:
"You have a WWII veteran by Quist that was further modified (from an M35 to an M51 to an M53) and used at BGS after 1951 through the 1990's.
The last revision was probably after 1975...that's when the new BGS color came on."
Lotnummer 4803 is stamped on the rim of the helmet "in the neck".
All three openings for the helmet split pins were welded shut.
The helmet is provided with "Rauhtarn".
The (sweaty) lining in the forehead area is "ventilated".
Wow! We're talking about a long career for this helmet! Well deserved rest in good hands. Thanks for showing. Jack

Hello,
Here we have an M40 veteran from World War II, which was modified by the BGS.
This BGS helmet is an M1953, which was converted from an M1951.
The interior is from the 1st model of the M1953 with the wide inner ring, double locking strip and no holes in the leather in the forehead area.
The welded chin strap eyelets from the M1951 are still there. The holes for the split pins of the old inner lining were welded. The helmet has been painted several times in black green RAL6012 (old) and subjected to increased wear.
Hello,
Here we have an M35 (ventilation openings riveted in), which was modified into an M53 at the BGS.
The rough paint is in RAL 6012.
The interior is from the 1st model of the M1953 with the wide inner ring, double locking strip and no holes in the leather in the forehead area. The chin strap eyelets correspond to the US M1 model.
The helmet has a really small head size of 60. The shell manufacturer is Quist.

Hello, this helmet as a lot of character, I've enjoyed every photo of it.
Great helmet!
