    Hi James.

This looks very interesting indeed, is the paint "chalky" in texture?

Pity it's missing the liner, but it's still a very fine piece.

I have a Russian Ssh60 with a similiar look with the faded paint with rust and it came out of Afghanistan, still has the liner

this looks like it could have been picked up on the battlefield from the middle east, they still wore them like that without the liner over their wool beanie cap or head wrap

cheers gunny ,and many thanks for the information battle gear ,your input is always most welcome ,i never even thought it might be from middle east ,allthough i was wondering why the different from the norm colouration and your explanation for lack of liner really helps me understand the reasons why its missing ,thanks pal

Another fine lid James and I must concur with others on the "Chalky" look, me and the kid have a Ssh68 that no doubt is an Afgahn worn lid with very much the same look....sun beaten no doubt. Nice to see a czech 53 that does not look like it was just taken off the shelf....
