    здесь впору альпинисту забираться;
    - Вон, на вершине, видишь? - в глубине
    у пулемётов «фрицы» копошатся.

    Ракета,
    всё, прощайте,
    нам пора,
    вытягивая шеи из траншеи,
    ощерились навстречу снайпера,
    заваливая лёгкие мишени.

    …Не покорилась с ходу высота,

    Storm. Musta-Tunturi

What does a person who is going to certain death think about?
Probably, he mentally says goodbye to family and friends, to the ground, grass or snow, this sky and clouds ...
But here is the signal to attack. The last puff and everything is forgotten, there is one thought in the brain: forward - there is no turning back. Everything that was before is a different life, now only forward - to quickly overcome the open space. In this impulse there is hatred for the enemy and the desire to fulfill the order at all costs, and the instinct of self-preservation with the last hope: what if you get lucky?
The blood, boiling, thrashes furiously in the temples, cotton feet, a red veil before the eyes; and suddenly a blow, a jolt, bewilderment - what is this, is it really the end?
    Agony, death.
Such or approximately such were the last minutes of the seven hundred and fifty soldiers of the 614th separate penal company, who stormed the height 260 of the Musta-Tunturi ridge.
They, who remained lying on the slopes and in the gorge of the ridge, helped accelerate the defeat of the German rangers and liberate the Soviet Arctic from the invaders.
We do not remember their names, did not see them in person, but we know for sure that they had the only chance to atone for their real (or, more often, far-fetched) guilt and die as heroes. They honorably used this opportunity and died, since there simply could not be any other outcome: it was impossible to take an almost sheer rock under heavy fire from machine guns and flamethrowers. However, the company fulfilled its main task: by diverting the enemy's attention, it made it possible for others to take this height. And no matter how the life of the fighters developed until this last attack in their life, they died with a clear conscience and deserved our bright memory of their heroism!

From the memoirs of Lieutenant General Sergei Ivanovich Kabanov about the assault on the Musta-Tunturi ridge:

During the Petsamo-Kirkenes operation, the 12th Marine Brigade with the attached 614th separate penalty company and the 1st barrage detachment of the Northern Defense Region launched an offensive from the isthmus on the Sredny Peninsula. By 12-00, units of the brigade crossed the Musta-Tunturi mountain range and joined up with units of the 63rd Marine Brigade, which had landed behind enemy lines. By the end of the second day, units of the brigade cut the Titovka-Porovaara road.
In the artillery preparation, which began at 3:30 on October 10, 209 barrels took part; in an hour and a half, they fired 47 thousand shells and mines. At 5 o'clock, the fire was transferred deep into the enemy's defenses, and the infantry went on the attack. And then something unexpected happened, albeit predicted by nature: the hurricane instantly covered everything with snow. The headwind blinded the attackers, knocked them off their feet, prevented them from climbing steep slopes, finding passages in the wire, laid by artillery and sappers, they had to be redone; but behind the overcome obstacle was a new one ...

Excerpt from the book of M. G. Oreshet "Orphaned shores"

A heavy burden fell on the lot of the honest man Nikolai Ivanovich Ryabtsovsky. In October 1944, he commanded a unit that was called "cannon fodder" in front-line usage. It was the 614th separate penal company. Here is what Nikolai Ivanovich said:
    - The penalty company is the expiation of the crime for which I got here, with blood. Silly, I'll tell you, there was a theorem. There were also bad people in the company, but mostly it consisted of soldiers and officers loyal to the Motherland, who accidentally fell into everyday life. Before the attack, they were equal in rights and the task of all had one - to wash off the stain of shame from themselves. And people went to machine guns installed in capital pillboxes at an altitude of about three hundred meters, climbed the mined slopes of mountains, saw grenades rolling under their feet, and flamethrowers aimed at them. And they knew there was no turning back.
On the eve of the attack, we went to Musta-Tunturi, and suddenly we felt ourselves like insects in front of this whopper. I didn’t even think about the Germans - it was scary at the thought that we would have to go along such steep slopes. We gave it a shot, then, along the gorge. We run with full gear, the spirit locks, the legs are cotton, the heart is in the throat. They crossed a hundred meters when the Nazis began to treat them with grenades. At the same time they hit a minefield. Here and there is no strength, have dried up, but where can you go in a narrow stone sack? The guys fell like rye ears.
We will storm further. Ahead is a rock, and behind it is a gentle rise of about a hundred meters along a completely bald stone. How the enemy shot us there! With gusto. The bodies rolled down, and the command: "Forward! Forward!"
There were 750 of us before the attack. How many soldiers reached the German defensive line, I cannot say. The dead were hastily covered with pebbles and immediately let's write stupid reports on who and how he showed himself in the bloody attack. So I think: was she needed?

    Storm

Soldiers and commanders of the assault 614th separate penal company,
those killed in the gorge and on the slopes of height 260 of the Musta-Tunturi ridge.

    They put on clean linen
Pea coats, quilted jackets, mittens -
Everything that will come true tomorrow
And it will never be useful again.

    They won't see the dawn
Don't make it at least until dawn
    Look:
stepped into the night on Tunturi
Into immortality and assault - this separate
Seven and a half furious bayonets
    Penalty 614th company:
    Sons, fathers, soldiers and sailors
Fatherland - for the sake of peace and freedom.

    Deceased soldier's monologue:

    Death circled behind us,
but now the battle is decisive, the last one.
I swear I'll give my life dearly
today there - at the front line.

    Over the height 260 -
    damn Pass, be it wrong,
but there is an order: to be taken in the morning -
we will not be counted otherwise.

    Hmmm ...
There are few chances: on the forehead - like on the "wall",
    here it is just right for a climber to climb;
    - Over there, at the top, see? - in depth
the Fritz machine guns are swarming.

    Rocket,
    everything, goodbye
    it is time,
pulling necks out of the trench
    snarled towards the sniper,
    hitting light targets.

... The height did not submit on the move,
well, well, there will be no other case,
don't feel sorry for us even through the years
do not blame me - remember people:
how they climbed up without hiding, without fear,
the smell of blood and other people's sweat,
they strangled this scum in hand-to-hand combat,
interfering in the mud - to vomit, to vomiting.

    Stubbornly, not hesitating, not melting
annoying tears - for the wounded and corpses
scrambled, breaking down, along the ledges,
and behind, wriggling like a snake,
pushing up from the back -
into pitch hell from the inaccessible slopes,
into the arms of death and death moans -
    sneaking wine:
    one guilt for all
    mercilessly presented there,
    on Tunturi,
worse than grenades and pillboxes ...
I will remember our penal company,
when you have to pay the bills!

    Dawn was rising ...
    The abated blizzard
Idly swept away all the leftovers
Traces of the night battle and the enemy
Fighters on the slopes and below - in the valley.

    They never flinch at night
And, for the hundredth time broken by fragments,
Do not wake up in cold sweat:
    There -
in the gorge of the fallen, but not forgotten,
    their eternal sleep
    windswept
At the junction of gloomy rocks and ocean -
Keeps the granite ridge that has become to us
A measure of courage and an open wound.

An idle crowd does not go here:
Gloomy harsh land, as they say.
I stand at the border post -
The last one on the Northern border.

    Covered in the polar darkness
Not far away, behind low clouds -
    Soars above a nameless height
As a symbol of sorrow - the outline of the obelisk.

And, bowing his head in silence,
I come to the bottom, to the top
Where are the ashes of the fighters of the gorge and the bay
We have not even been returned to this day.

Right here: at the very edge of the country,
At the icy expanses of the water surface -
The sons of the Motherland stood to death,
Not yielding, indeed, not an inch!

I am fit for most of them
Now, more than half a century later,
    I'm good ...
And I am proud of the defenders
The dignity and name of Man.

And to all for the atonement of sins,
Whether imputed is fair, biased -
    I kneel by the wreaths
For this feat of a penalty box soldier.
