I’ve never been convinced about the removal of the liners.. the images shown here certainly suggest them still to be present, perched high on the head.
I have a balaclava and am pretty sure it would be cold and uncomfortable to wear steel directly on top, not to mention insecure..
I would suspect maximum adjustment and force were a more likely combination!
I have read that they did remove them in winter sometimes and maybe so. I know they did come out with a version of the liner where the two front pads were spaced widely apart so a ushanka could be worn underneath. I used to own one that was in this configuration. It was a factory done variation.
