1939 K98k

Bought this about a month ago. As much as I love perfect, clean, matching numbers examples of old firearms (I have a beautiful, almost all matching numbers 1910 or 1911 Brazilian Mauser I hope to post here soon), this is what I really love buying. I'm in it for the history, and this old girl has clearly "seen some things," to put it mildly. Very few matching numbers, what look like some field repairs to the stock (as shown in the pictures below), a missing screw or two, etc. At the end of the day, she still puts rounds downrange, pretty accurately as well.

Very nice to see. A mauser borsigwalde made 98k from 1939. Mine is a 1940 243 code with the same "26" markings also. Missing capture screws could be replaced fortunately. Seems more rare to come by than BYF 44 or DOU produced 98ks. Does the bolt happen to match your rifle or match itself? These guns certainly have risen in cost over the years. Thanks for sharing.

Nice looking 98! My 1938 "243" coded 98 is finished with the black phosphate coating so I wonder if they changed that in 39. Congrats on the pickup

I should've taken pictures of the bolt. There's almost no matching numbers at all. The "top of the bolt" has 2142 electro stenciled onto it, which I assume is the original number, because there are a few pieces with that number, as seen in the photos. Other than that, everything bolt related is stamped with different numbers. Same thing with the floor plate and trigger guard (I thought I took a picture of that, but I guess not).

It's currently being stored at my brother's house because I have too much clutter in my apartment. Once I de-clutter, I'll bring it over and do a proper assessment of just how mismatched she really is.

I thought the phosphate coating was only applied in '44 and '45?

You are right that's my bad! I don't know why I forgot but my 38 is a last ditch rifle with the semi kreigsmodell stock so I guess they refinished parts of guns they had sitting around in the phosphate

Nice having an early war example as the bluing finish is often nicer than late war examples. Always glad to see another Borsigwalde made 98k. Might want to check out K98k Forum if you get a chance. Good info over there too. Again thanks for sharing your rifle.
