Looks like a standard K98 with a sporterized stock.

    My thoughts exactly.

The 2nd photo threw me for a second... I thought the edge of the table was a Mannlicher/ Carcano style magazine.

Yep another K98k that had to fall prey to a Bubba. Very nice but just cut value in half. Why is it people can never leave well enough alone when it comes to classic firearms?

Well, we must remember that at one time you could buy a K98 for $40 and was a cheap rifle to turn into a sporting rifle. I have worked with a lot of these "Sporters" over the years that have come into my shop. It was a more practical world after WW2, they were not thinking about collecting a rifle, but maybe something they could use to hunt deer or killing a fox after a hen... regardless it is sad that it has happend to this rifle, but the history is still there!

    Thanks

    Exactly!
And it was found in the Ardennes so that makes sence. There is a lot of hunting to do there.
    Thanks for your input, all!

Agree NDShooter that many were sporterized back in 50s and 60s by many who wanted them for deer rifles with the strong mauser action. I guess hind sight is 20-20 concerning these weapons but these days it still hurts to see them sportered.
