I recently made a nice find on ebay that might fall into the "oddity" category. Wire-free glasses in very good condition, a "Zwicker" as they are called in Germany. The piece is very old and comes in a beautifully engraved aluminum case lined with dark blue velvet. Manufacturer marking says "Optal". The special thing about these glasses is that this version was very popular with Reichsfuhrer SS Heinrich Himmler. It will make a nice period accessory for one of my uniforms.

That's right TJ! That's why I bought the piece. I also like to put Reichsmark coins and banknotes into the pockets of the tunics or sometimes an old period fountain pen into the inside pocket. I was once able to buy a couple of Pelikan fountain pens from the 1930s at a flea market.

Luckily I don't wear glasses, so I can confidently use them for my uniforms I actually always call this type of glasses 'Himmler glasses' because they immediately remind me of him, because there are countless photographs of him on the Internet, in which he wears exactly such eyeglasses.

In the 1980s you could make some nice finds for little money at German flea markets.
