WW2 German nazi silverware
I hope this is the right section to post this. I bought this WW2 German Knife abought 30 years ago or more. It has eagle with swaz on handle and the letters Dh under it. Up the handle near blade it reads Br. Henneberg BM and a 40 with circle around it. It also says Br. Henneberg on the blade but you can only see traces of it. The other side of handle and blade are plain. Was wondering if anyone knows what the Dh stands for under eagle ? Thanks
The knife was made by a Polish company Br Henneberg of Warsaw. The company logo dates to 1896. The Dh is Polish script. As such I would be suspicious of the pedigree of it.
Per James Yanne's Encyclopedia of Third Reich Tableware, pgs 172-173, there is a photo of a spoon from this same set, the Dh logo is associated with Bernard Rust as Dh is shorthand for Deutsche-Hochschule or German Higher Education. He was the Reich Minister of Science, Education and Popular culture and this was noted as being his ministry's official state pattern.
Yannes notes there is a possible secondary association, but the most commonly accepted one is with Rust.
Interesting information DavidRF. As the NPEA have used existing earlier produced cutlery and not manufactured anything specifically for the organisation.

The knife you showed was part of the Deutsches ?aus in Warschau - a cultural, gastronomic and hotel center for Germans. Currently, its building is the Presidential Palace. Except his is one of the only more or less complete works on the topic of Third Reich silverware, and even he notes in the Encyclopedia he'a not purporting everything featured to be legitimate..only a collection of what's out there.by grygierek

There really isn't any way of knowing what may or may not be legitimate, but the entire contents of the book are definitely NOT fake as several of the items he features are also shown in Mark Griffith's Liberated books.
This book is very deceptive. Contains generally known original cutlery. Added to this are a whole lot of copies and fakes. This causes confusion in the minds of collectors. This is the worst possible mixture.
Yannes himself notes that he can't state with 100% certainty everything in the books he's written is authentic, but he is literally one of the few people who have written books about TR silver items....until someone else comes along that can do better, his books are basically the go to for identifying them.
It certainly doesn't help that higher ranking Nazi officials were likely given gifts of silver from countries, companies and individuals looking to win favor with them that likely haven't been documented or documentation was destroyed due to fighting or intentional acts.
