Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

I wanted to bump this up to the top for today is the 78th Anniversary of the 20 Juli 44 Resistance Movement and assassination attempt to remove Hitler from power.

As we know, the attempt failed and many of the Resistance Movement personnel as well as their families paid with their lives or imprisonment.

As a curator of a US Army museum, I have the opportunity to conduct research on archival records that we have in our collection. We have several hundred thousand documents, reports, books, photos and other archival records. It takes hours to read through each document and like pulling low hanging fruit from a vine there are times while researching where past and present meet and a piece of the jigsaw puzzle fits in place. It is quite rewarding when a story can continue to be told...

I was conducting research for a unit that is assigned to the 1st Armored Division one day and I came across a photograph that has very special meaning to both those Resistance members who died, but also for those who survived and promised that they would do everything within their powers to ensure that Germany would never again be ruled by an evil Dictator.

We know that Claus von Stauffenberg planted the bomb and was executed shortly afterwards and although he was not able to see the outcome of the war, one of Stauffenberg's son's, Berthold Maria Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, Born July 3, 1934 who was just 10 years old when his father was executed survived WW2 and went on to become a General in the West German Army (Bundeswehr) from 1956 to 1994.

Almost 50 years later in June 1994, Major General Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg presented the COLD WAR Campaign Streamer to one of the units of the 1st Armored Division when they were stationed in Mannheim, Germany. The 1st Armored Division now calls Fort Bliss, Texas home.

Following in his father's footsteps and becoming a Soldier of his beloved country, the Stauffenberg legacy lives on.

May we never forget those who chose the hard right over the easy wrong, who stood up and faced certain death but refused to allow Tyranny and Oppression be the cornerstones of a country.

    Best regards, stay safe

If the plot had succeeded in killing Hitler, it would have led to yet another "Dolchstoss Legende" - "Stab in the back legend" taking hold among Germans...The conspirators were not willing to surrender unconditionally as demanded by the Allies...they were hoping for a negotiated peace instead...It was clear to Churchill, among others, that Germany would have to be soundly crushed by force of arms...
