Interesting story. I've read parts of the Rudolf Hoss autobiography and he details the days in May 1945 when his party of fleeing Nazis met up with Himmler and his group in North Germany. They were all heading north with the idea of making a crossing to slip into Sweden. But shortly after the parties parted, Himmler's group must have decided to head south, probably the intention was to give a false trail if the Hoss group was captured. Hoss wrote that Himmler was strangely upbeat and jolly when they met. Himmler probably decided to commit suicide when the cyanide vial was discovered. If it was taken from him he had lost control of his destiny. Had he retained it undiscovered he may have tried to negotiate with the Allies to make a deal, at least until he knew whether he was heading to the gallows.
