It is certainly better if the work is done by Russian hiwis.

Those who rest on this image are a group of Russian workers. Note that the structure of this house is supported by wooden pillars nailed to the ground. Also note the wooden scaffolding to place the highest rows of logs.

Must have been back breaking work, with all those mosquitoes, the heat, then the cold.

Superb thread, very interesting and gives us a insight into a soldiers life so far away from home.

I hope there is more to come, and I wonder how many of these structures have survived to this day?

I too, could look at these pictures all day long

The Germans built perfectly equipped bunkers inside, equipped with heating stoves and bunk beds for the troops.
On the Leningrad front where positions remained stabilized for more than two years we see some examples of what the landsers called small houses.

In the stalingrad area in the fall of 1942, before the Soviet siege, there were authentic small bunker towns dug into the side walls of the deep sandstone gullies typical of that area. Several authors describe the incredible services they had, including some with electricity, cast iron stoves and good furniture from the surrounding villages.

Many officers and soldiers were photographed in front of their small houses to transmit to their families a good image of their living conditions at the front.
In some of these photos we see what German carpenters could do with birch branches.

Another very common photograph is posing in front of your squad's bunker door, either alone or with comrades.
