The Road Riga – Pskov - Leningrad



On this road I have identified three signs. On the map I indicate them with the numbers (1), (2) and (3)

Sign (1) Distance to Leningrad 276 km.
This sign is exactly 13 km east of Pskov (Pleskau) in the direction of Leningrad; and correctly indicates the distances to Luga: 136 km and Leningrad: 278 km.



Sign (2) A place called Volosovo, halfway between both roads; that of Tallinn-Narva and that of Riga-Pleskau.
The distance to Petersburg is 75 km, but to the Northeast by Gubanitsy (6 km) is a secondary road that after 35 km connects in Kipen with the main road from Tallinn-Narva.
But you can also go to Krasnogvardeysk (until 1918 and currently called Gatchina, where Tsar Nicholas I was born) 40 km away and there connect to the main road that comes from Riga-Pleskau and that will take us to Petersburg after another 40 km.
By the way we are 1.545 km from the popular Berlin district of Mitte.

Sign (3) Distance to Leningrad 70 km.
A place named Rozhdestveno
It is for sure the road sign most photographed by German soldiers on the eastern front.
The Bear "Misha" with a helmet, with a bottle, with a moneybox….. became absolutely popular among the German occupants and every soldier who passed by took the typical photo. There are hundreds and hundreds of them.















The sign says: Do you want to take pictures? Don't be embarrassed, take out your wallet and donate to the W.H.W. (Winterhilfswerk)

Distance to Berlin: 1485 km.

There are some variations.
One of them indicates the distance to Bremen.

The Road Moscú-Nóvgorod-Chudovo-Leningrad.



On This road I have identified seven signs. On the map I indicate them with numbers (1) to (7)

Sign (1) In the city of Novgorod.



Sign (2) On the outskirts of the city of Novgorod.



Signals (3) and (4) somewhere between Novgorod and Chudovo.

Signals (5) and (6) Distance to Leningrad 100 km. They are in Babino, 17 km from Chudovo and 17 km from Liubán.





Sign (7) Another of WWII's best-known sign images.
The place where this sign is located is Chapki, 9 km from Toshno in the direction of Leningrad (from which it is another 45 km). Right there is the intersection with the city ring road. We see that it indicates Mga at 25 km and indicates the direction of Shlisselburg on the shores of Lake Ladoga, from where the Neva river originates.









By the way, the sign says:
Important supply road.
Therefore treat it with the same love as your bride

There are other photos that indicate some of the Rollbahn that we have talked about, but the place where they were can not be determined, because they do not indicate any distance to a specific point.

I have found three of the Road (Rollbahn) Narwa - Petersburg

And finally there is some distance indicator, which could be in any of the Rollbahn, like the one in the following photo:



And another sign of a sense of humor is this sign 33 km away, made with a statue of Comrade Stalin.




For that distance I think I could be in a place called Peterhof, which I am not going to talk about in this thread, because of the two great palaces on the outskirts of Leningrad: Peterhof and Pushkin we will share a new thread from the Geography of the USSR series



And by the way, the photo with which I opened the thread with the two Russian children is made quite far from the Ass of the World.





If you look closely, the place is 47 kilometers from Novgorod (points to the right of the image) as well as the link to Peterburg through Chudovo.
But to the left the sign points in the direction of Dno and Porchov, at 78 km and Pleskau at 138 km. So the photo is taken at the Shimsk junction, on the west vertex of Lake Ilmen.
