There are also images of German soldiers carving their wooden canes with Hiwis or Russian civilians and even of Russian POWs carving the canes.

These last two photographs are from my collection. The second soldier on the left of the first photo is the same as the first soldier on the right in the second photo. I always found him an interesting guy. It is clear that he was wounded and hospitalized and dedicated his time to carving his cane.

I really like the camaraderie seen on the faces of group photos of wounded soldiers in field hospitals.
Who knows, maybe he survived the war and may even have kept his old Volkhov walking stick to walk, as an old man, through the streets of his town in Germany ...

I cannot answer you exactly, although I imagine that such a specific place at a road junction has changed absolutely in these 80 years, although it was simply because the current highway is much wider than the "Rollbahn" used by the Germans....
