I have been in the Bell Tower many times over the last 25 years of travelling to Ukraine. This is my first summer not going in all that time. My first visit to the Bell Tower the church building to its left was in ruins. It has now been rebuilt to its former beauty.

    Thank You,

    William

I just went through this whole post again slowly, such great enjoyment to relive memories. For never having gone to Kyiv you do an excellent job of explaining all the pictures. You should visit.

    Thanks,

    William

    Default Kiev Funicular

The truth is that I was saving this photograph of Kiev taken in the summer of 1941, to upload later.

But thinking that for the first time in 25 years William and his wife have not been able to visit the city and its surroundings. As I know that they surely recognize what it is about. I will upload it now with some current images and a brief comment

The Kiev Funicular serves the city of Kiev, connecting the historic Upper town, and the lower commercial neighborhood of Podil through the steep Volodymyrska Hill overseeing the Dnieper River.

The line consists of only two stations and is operated by the Kiev city community enterprise Kyivpastrans.

The Kiev funicular during the German occupation from 1941 to 1943 continued to operate and carry passengers, as it consumed very little electricity to run.

Three minutes of travel to cover about 240 meters but with a slope of 36%

I have ridden it many times and know how grateful I am for it as I had to walk up one summer as it was under construction. Never again. Great pictures of the past and present. Thank you Santi.

This virus pandemic is nasty. I so miss not going to Ukraine as I have so many friends. For the past 12 years we have taught conversational English to about 150 students over a two week period. Many great friendships made there. Plus we also helped with a summer camp for Families with Special Needs Children out in a village, two of my favorite weeks in a beautiful setting. But not this year and I am very disappointed. God willing next year.

There is just nothing any better than investing in other people.

    William.

Santi, I am usually there for the month of July. If we could meet up that would be wonderful.

Four new images of the Pechersk Lavra monastery in Kiev during the German occupation.

The first two from outside Gate Church of the Trinity. (numbers 1-2 on the red arrow in the map).

The furthest view photography is now part of my collection; however, some lover of the Kübelwagen bid higher and won the photograph in which the German SUV is seen from closer. Pity!
