October 1941. Operation Typhoon. The final German effort in the race to Moscow.

Orel was captured by the Germans in the early days of Operation Typhoon. The 4th Panzer División takes the city.
“On October 3, the 4th Panzer Division captured Orel. This gave us the opportunity to obtain a good road and take control of the important railway union and the road junction, which would become the basis of our additional actions. The capture of the city happened so unexpectedly for the enemy that when our tanks entered Orel, the trams still circulated through the city and the evacuation of industrial companies, which were generally prepared carefully by the Russians, could not be carried out, since the factories and plants to the railway station. In the streets around there were machines and boxes of factory equipment and raw materials” (Guderian Memories)

But it is convenient for a moment to stop at the Orel of the early twentieth century. A peaceful city from western Russia, a crossroads in the network of roads and railways to Moscow, which had a famous electric tram since the end of the 19th century. The spring thaws use to cause the Oká river to overflow and flood its banks in the city. Two famous steel bridges, among others, comunicate both banks of the river. The most famous was the Bridge of Mary through which the Moscow road ran and on whose eastern bank were two famous temples: the Church of the Transfiguration and the Church of the Intercession.

Let´s see some postcards of the early twentieth century

The Oká river crosses the city of Orel from South to North, exactly at the point where it is crossed by the Maria Bridge.
Gostinnaya Street (The Moscow Highway), later called by the Germans as Hauptstrasse, crosses the city from southwest to northeast and crosses the Oká River through the Mary Bridge (also Known as Red Bridge)

But if the Hauptstrasse was very photographed by the soldiers, like the bridge of Mary (also Known as Red bridge), the truth is that when crossing the bridge, you would reach the great esplanade of the two churches of which we have spoken. And there also the German soldiers took many photographs, during the 22 months that the occupation of the city lasted

Perhaps if we move away a little we will have more perspective to see the river, the bridge and the churches.
