I think you're right. The cuff title looks like the customs official one.
Tom
customs.
Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated!
Here's another picture of this guy
German customs with what looks to be a edelweiss patch on his right arm.
Morris
This is customs and very rare, not for the tunic, but due to the Edelweiss insignia,
worn upon the left upper arm. As far as I can see it is the army version. For customs a
special Edelweiss was agreed in spring 1941.
It took until fall 1942 as when the customs version may have been manufactured, but then
only a minor quantity. It was meant to be worn with the Hochgebirgsuniform, but
actually it was used by men along the borders, where service was quite dangerous then!
There was no mention again about this insignia between December 1942 and February 1943
in the official correspondence about this badge and its introduction. It is possible the official
customs version hardly was ever manufactured, due to shortage of material and men bought
other versions. Mainly the Amy type.
I wrote an article about this insignia for a German magazine in 1992. Further I did write it
for the "Military Advisor" (USA) where it was published in the summer of 1996. By
now about 17 years ago!
Thank you very much for the information Wilhelm Saris!
