HI guys,
Another named kit I have is this one - that is interesting in several ways.
It has the initials KM scratched into the lid and base in quite large letters - but then also ( in a more delicate, precise way ) the name and rank of a different soldier?
This is an Uffz Brandt who’s name appears to have been carefully punched via dots into the alloy surface with a pointed object, maybe a nail or similar??

Also there is on the bottom a date and place – 1945 and HOURTIN ( which is a commune in the south of France near Bordeaux. )

Now as Bordeaux was liberated on August 28th of 1944, this man must have been a POW I guess in an immediate post war internment camp there
( where he obviously had time on his hands to mark the mess tin this way… and do a bit of doodling on it? )
Maybe also retrieved from amongst the tons of surrendered equipment, 'KM's" mess kit was issued to Uffz Brandt to use as a POW?
I have read that prior German camps were reused to house the former enemy who were then employed as labour to rebuild the destroyed French infrastructure.
We will never know for sure but again, things like these pique my interest!
Thought you may enjoy it too...
Dan
