no,,,in its present state,,any attempt at preservation would be welcomed
Don't repaint it, as that would remove what little remaining collector value this item has.
Preservation and restoration are two different things.

This is WW2. The D on the bottom indicates it was waterproofed/tight. I wouldn't, touch it, repainting it won't add value, I know I like having things in as found condition.

It's subjective you can do whatever you feel right. If you have more than one you can repaint some and leave the rest as you found them.
