This is something you would see on a directional sign post as depicted in the period photo you attached. It would be difficult to say this is original because it appears the signs were largely field made. I don't know of any definitive study on the topic. It certainly looks to be a period made sign. Does it come with any provenance? Neil

My only observation is that the fonts on the piece look a bit thicker than the photo, the rounded instead of pointy tip and the period that is very close to the 'L' but not the 'P' as depicted the pic, again, just observations.. G

It certainly looks the part - but the garden shed I painted 15 years ago has started cracking like that.... so I would need some provenance to be 100% sure of it.
