    Hi everyone,

I have been offered a grouping of things including this back pack. It is marked properly and dated 1936, though the straps have been modified. The question is field modified or post war? What do you guys thing?

This is an original Tornister pack made with cow hide - not pony fur. The straps are either civilian or perhaps military - but not standard German Riemen. The hardware (O rings) are not standard and looks to be of non military grade. This Tornister should have leather straps with adjustment hardware and D-rings for connecting to the pack. It looks like the retainer pins are missing too. They look like bolts with a movable retainer and a bit of rawhide to hold them in place. The Tornister looks a little beat and looks like it may need repair and it is anybody's guess as to the age of the straps. I don't know what the cost is for the lot but I would not pay more than $45 for the pack itself. NH

Thanks. I was aware it was missing quite abit as it didnt match up to those I have seen online. Anyways I bought the other items in the grouping and at the end of the day he though this in for free, so the price was right

Free is good! Still worth about $45.00. If you make a little repair, clean it up slightly and add straps it will be great for display. You have the option of adding full length straps or just the short type for attachment to Y-straps. NH

Tempted to do that actually. At least a small restore would bring it back to its former glory

Took delivery of this on Thursday. Been a sunny day so I have been out and taken some better pics.

In hand it looks better than the initial pics I got. The straps look like they could almost be belts or harnesses, like say a german aircraft harness. The leather at the bottom is a strap of some kind and they are D rings on the bottom. Two different colours of thread has been used for stitching. The Straps certainly have a feel and look of heavy use, and a nice colour to them.

It really does look like a field modification, but we will never know.

Not bad looking! I'm guessing the straps were taken from some other bit of gear - not sure of the origin. A lot of these packs were used during POW periods and post war. You can get replacement straps for this and the hardware to properly attach it to the pack. Taucha is in Saxony.
