Hello.
This object is not made of iron but of copper or of some kind of copper alloy, it seems to be more ancient than WW2, and doesn't look like anything worn on a uniform.
could some version of this be a possibility?

Yes, absolutely, a cruder version without any type of wood inlay, the hole above the skull being one of several where the Christ figue was attached.
Pictures of the back of the object wouldn't hurt though.
yes, makes total sense, that's probably the lower plaque on a cross.
