The plating inside would suggest it's there for keeping something clean. And looking at the thick walls probably to keep something warm. Maybe a large field thermos for the soldiers.

The plating and thick walls would not be there for regular water or something like oil or fuel.

I found an identical example and it is a WW1 German thermos cask (for keeping liquid hot), maybe coffee or things like that.
