This is indeed a curious item. Do you have any photos of what it looks like without the covering on it? I must admit that I have never seen an example of an Imperial German trench club with a cover on it. Perhaps there is some post war reason for it such as to conceal or protect it.

Do you have any provenance or further information about it? How it was acquired etc?

I imagine it’s more of a cosh than a rigid club.

    Greetings all,

What an interesting object. Potentially, 70 to 100 years old and every stitch as tight as the day it was made. Also, amazing how there's no indication of hands' oils staining the holding end any differently than the working end....pristine except for a few aging spots. Personally, I don't believe this cosh is something contemporary to WWII, let alone WWI. However, I still would not wish to get hit by it ;-)

    Best,

Bought in a auction I could open the stitching but that might spoil it.

I don't think that there is any 'might' about it, and that would be a stupid thing to do. The weave of the material reminds me of the British webbing and haversack material. I would be interested to know what the auctioneers said about it, but there is nothing about it to say whether it is German - or any other army for that matter.

    Cheers,
    Steve
