    Hello chaps,
I’ve just won a nice 1915 ersatz mess tin (to be posted after arrival), which bears the maker’s mark ‘S.E & St’.
I have not encountered this maker before and wonder if any of you are familiar with them. I cannot imagine what the ‘St’ is a contraction of.
    Many thanks,
    Rob

Hi Rob, could 'St' be short for Stahl ( steel ) as in 'Saxon Enamel & Steel ?.......

    Ooh, thanks Dan... good thinking.
Certainly a possible. I was thinking along the ‘& Son, & Co.’ route, but a descriptive of the product could make sense.
Didn’t one of the steel helmet producers have a name similar to this? It would certainly make sense that they could produce mess kits.
    Cheers!

Yes, the SE factory in Lauter was known as the Sachsische Emailler und Stanzwerke ( Saxon Enamelling & substance Factory )

That sounds like the answer to my question!
I’ll go with that, unless I find a confirmed alternative, but I’m pretty sure you must be right. Makes perfect sense.
Many thanks, Dan, and all the very best,
    Rob
