Late in the Great War with raw materials in short supply, the German army were increasingly seeking new materials with which to manufacture equipment. This is an example that I recently received of a now scarce late war glass ersatz water bottle. With the bottle made of a thick green glass, the cover is manufactured from a woven paper cloth material. There is a manufacturers stamp on the cover which has faded to the point of being eligible. Interestingly, when held the cover gives off a sound similar to paper being crinkled. This example is in completely untouched condition and still retains its original stopper and black chord for tightening of the cover.

I never would have thought there was such an example made of glass. It shows the situation with available resources late in the war for Germany; it is probably something they could have been doing all along assuming it’s quite strong being glass. Is it a dark green dyed soda lime glass maybe?
The thickness and shape reminds me a lot of crown royal bottles which are incredibly strong and can survive great impact for glass. This canteen likely held up in the trench life until being hit by some metal projectile(s).
