I emailed with the former owner and he has a picture of his dad dated 1912 , he thinks the picture shows his dad on his maiden hunting trip.
Unfortunate he doesnt wear his hunting knife, but it was common in these day to get your Waidbesteck wenn you got your hunting license.
Therefore he dated the Backhaus Waidbesteck before 1914.

From a book dated July 1935, the author is Walter Frevert the designer of the F Dula knives, the book is regarding the Hannover Bloodhound association which he was also their leader. The text mentions that you can buy a Frevert Waidbesteck made by a Solingen firm, there is no doubt in my mind that the picture shows an early example of a F Dula set pre patent.
Apart from the blade shape, look closely at the scabbard.

Thx Gary that is a great asset to this post.
I have seen your early F.Dula Besteck with scabbard fittings, would be great if you would ad those pics here.

I have been looking for years to authenticate this scabbard with the metal mounts and was very pleased to finally find the proof that the very early F Dula's had these metal mounts on their scabbards. This is one of the two early pieces I have without the DRGM on the blades.

Thank you Gary for adding that beauty to the thread!
I have no doubt that it is the initial production of F.Dula, its a pity they abandoned this type of scabbard as imo its the ultimate design!

I was Lucky enough to come across this huge bowie, a period hunting knife with an added DJS Emblem.
The emblem is attachted to the grip with 2 pins, originally it was a DJS emblem with a needle on the back, it was curved to fit the grip and almost all silvering is worn by use.
Its a high quality build with nickel silver fittings and a chrome plated iron guard.
It has an engraving on the spine "Jagermut" meaning "Hunter courage"
The scabbard has 2 inner runners and it snaps like the RAD hewers, its impressive.
I have made a few pics with a F.Dula and a Backhaus bowie besides it so you can see its size.
Anyone who ever had a Dula in his hands knows they are massive...
